Where does consumer coverage of mortgages mislead clients most?

National coverage of mortgages and protection is written for a general audience, and simplification is unavoidable. The practical effect is that advisers spend part of most first meetings correcting an impression the client arrived with.

This matters because the corrections consume the time that could be spent on suitability, and because a client who feels contradicted can disengage. Knowing which misconceptions are most common makes them easier to address early and without condescension.

Discussion questions:

  • Which specific claims from consumer coverage are you most often asked to explain?
  • Have any of them shifted in the last year, or are they broadly the same ones?
  • What wording have you found effective when correcting an inaccurate expectation?

General observations are more useful than criticism of individual journalists or publications.
