How many clients can one adviser genuinely serve well?

Client capacity per adviser is discussed constantly and rarely with agreement. The answer clearly depends on the service proposition, the support around the adviser and the complexity of the work.

This matters because a firm that plans capacity badly either underserves clients or carries cost it cannot support, and both problems surface slowly.

Questions to open the discussion:

  • What do you consider a realistic client load for an adviser in your type of firm?
  • Which support roles most increase the number of clients that can be served well?
  • What are the early warning signs that capacity has been exceeded?

Please describe your own experience rather than presenting any figure as an industry standard.

Contributions carrying practical detail are the most valuable, provided they contain no client information, no regulated advice and no confidential material belonging to your firm or a third party.
